Kathak dance begins with a vandana, which is a way of showing respect to the deity or guru. It is a performance that combines words of praise with dance movements and rhythmic patterns to create a graceful opening piece.
SARSWATI VANDANA:
Yaa Kundendu tushaara haara-dhavalaa,
Yaa shubhra-vastra’avritha
Yaa veena-vara-danda-manditakara,
Yaa shwetha padma’asana
Yaa brahma’achyutha shankara
prabhritibhir Devai-sadaa Vanditha
Saa Maam Paatu Saraswati Bhagavatee
Nihshesha jaadyaa-pahaa.
Meaning : She is the one who is wearing the beautiful white jasmine flower garland. She is the one who always dresses in spotless clothes. She is the one holding a Veena, which she is playing. She is the one who sits on the white lotus throne. She is worshipped by Gods such as Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. May she removes the darkness of ignorance, protect me!
GURU PRANAAM: GURU VANDANA:
These are the words of adoration to the teacher. This is done in vilambiit laya.
